Stocking Avenue
Dublin Bus routes 74 & 74A
New 7 full day service - September 2007
Dublin Bus introduced a number of route enhancements for the Ballycullen, Knocklyon & Ballyboden areas of South Dublin on Sunday 30th September 2007.
Pivotal to these improvements was the introduction of a seven day timetable to routes 74/ 74A from the new Stocking Lane development, previously just a peak time limited Monday to Friday service.
Here is a feature on routes 74/ 74A on this first Sunday working ( 30/9/07 )
Ringsend Garage AV 9 as the extended Dublin City terminus of route 74/ 74A at Macken Street in the south docklands development. Previously routes 74 & 74A operated to Eden Quay, however in attempts to move bus termini from the city streets, routes 74/74A were extended down Townsend Street, Hanover Street, Sir John Rogerson's Quay & onto Macken Street. Ringsend Garage was already too busy with Tallaght routes turning in the garage forecourt to accommodate the 74/74A's, hence Macken Street being used. This also introduces a new phenomena for Dublin routes, similar to London where routes rest on a stand & begin again on another street. In the background of the above photo are some of the new Grand Canal docks apartments, on the site of the old gasometer & illustrate the changing shape of the city, once a derelict & starved area of the south quays, now home to thousands of new city dwellers.
Routes 74 & 74A began from Stocking Avenue on the 21st May 2007 as euro duties, with just limited peak services Monday to Friday.
Ironically, AV 9 operated the first route 74 departure in May & then again in September 2007.
While routes 74 & 74A both operate from the same terminus at both ends, they run completely different routings in between, until merging at Rathgar.
Route 74 operates from Pearse Street, via College Street, Kildare Street ( via routes 15 etc ) to Rathmines, Rathgar Road, Frankfort Avenue, Terenure Village, Templeogue Road, Templeogue Village, Knocklyon Avenue, Ballycullen Road & Stocking Avenue.
Route 74A operates from Pearse Street, via College Street, Kildare Street ( via routes 15 etc ) to Rathmines, Rathgar Road, Zion Road, Bushy Park Road, Rathdown Park, Rathfarnham Castle, Willbrook Park, Ballyboden Road, Stocking Lane & Stocking Avenue.
At the same time as routes 74/ 74A improvements, route 15B was extended from its terminus at Anne Devlin Park to Whitechurch Estate via Ballyboden Road.
Ringsend Garage operated routes 74 & 74A at Stocking Avenue
Route 74 at the new Macken Street terminus
Route 74 & 74A with new 7 day timetable
Route 74 via Knocklyon & Ballycullen to City Centre/ Macken Street
Route 74A via Bushy Park & Rathfarnham to City Centre/ Macken Street

From Saturday 19th November 2009, routes 74 & 74A operated via the new Samuel Beckett Bridge heading towards the Britain Quay terminus.
Traffic flow changes around the bridge & the closing of Sir John Rogerson's Quay to normal flow traffic forced both routes northside over the River Liffey & back onto Britain Quay using the bridge.
Routes 74 & 74a have had various terminus changes in the soth docks since the route was launched, this was caused by various issues such as commutter parking in the area & changes to road layouts in the area.
Routes 74 & 74A officially moved from Macken Street to Britain Quay on Sunday 18th January 2009, a new timetable was introduced on this day as well.
These are the first Dublin Bus routes to use the latest & spectacular new bridge in the capital.
