Dublin Bus introduced new route 4A from Harristown Bus Garage, via Ballymun, Phibsboro, O' Connell Street, Ballsbridge & Blackrock to Stradbrook Road on Monday 19th November 2007.

Route 4A  now compliments existing route 4, itself introduced in March 2006, along the same corridor as far as Blackrock Village with buses every 10 minutes during the week enhancing the Blackrock & Ballymun quality bus corridors.

Here is a feature on route 4A
Like existing route 4, route 4A is operated mostly by Volvo B7LA's artics with Wright Fusion from the 20 strong AW class fleet at Harristown Garage.
Route 4A has few twists & turns & with the huge crowds, especially near the RDS, an ideal rapid people mover. Sadly the current digging along the Rock Road through Ballsbridge as far as Merrion Square has the road surface in very poor condition.
AW 10 is seen resting along Stradbrook Hill close to the terminus at Blackrock.
This neighborhood hasn't been served since route 6 was withdrawn from nearby Abbey Park in the 1980's.

Dublin Bus have struggled to find suitable routes for their 20 artics, ranging from Xpresso peak routes, route 10 & now routes 4 & 4A
LONG VEHICLE - Stradbrook Hill is ideal for route 4A or any bus over 18 meters long
Dublin City & its buses are constantly changing. New route 4A with a completely new destination " Stradbrook " overtakes Donnybrook AX 537 on route 11 to Stillorgan/ Kilmacud. Also changing is the newly installed Dublin Bus stops, with O' Connell Street being the first road to receive these new information masterpieces in the last few weeks.
The Dublin Bus AW class are gradually being retro fitted with standard Dublin Bus light clusters, also using a body panel designed in house at Harristown.

AW 10 demonstrates the new light cluster arrangement.
Unlike route 4 which conveniently operates into Blackrock Village, route 4A continues straight on, using the Blackrock bypass heading towards Stradbrook Road.
