VOLVO B10L ALEXANDER ULTRA

VL Class

Dublin Bus Donnybrook Garage
In 1998, Dublin Bus launched 6 Alexander Belfast " Ultra " bodied Volvo B10L's into service on route 3 operating from Larkhill, via the City Centre to Sandymount/ Belfield.

These were the first full length LOW FLOOR vehicles for Dublin Bus, following on from the experimental Mazda Omni class featuring low floor technology.

As well as introducing low floor technology to the fleet, one vehicle, VL 6 was powered by LPG, being topped up by Dublin Bus at Sir John Rogersons Quay facility although would later return to the UK as its was only leased as part of a pilot programme.
Gradually the Ultra's were cascaded down from the 3 as new decker ALX 400's arrived at Donnybrook, in any case the 3 could not be fully operated by the VL's due to their low numbers. The VL class, which have remained exclusively at Donnybrook can now be found operating a variety of low key routes, such as the 46, 54A, 59- 59A, 63 & 111. Recently, some have appeared on Donnybrook's working of route 92 between Saint Stephens Green & Heuston Station.

Unlike Translink in Northern Ireland which began taking deliveries of the Ultra class from 1996 & continued with sizeable orders, currently holding 62, Dublin Bus was still not convinced of the benefits of low floor technology, perhaps given the numerous mechanical problems with this new concept.
VL 2 ( 97 D 59002 ) is seen in this feature, seen on route 45A at its outer terminus at Ballywaltrim in Bray, Saturday 2nd April 2005. Route 45A operating from Dun Laoighre Station via Ballybrack, Shankhill & serving Bray DART Station to Ballywaltim is usually operated by decker Olympians but due to an earlier breakdown, the VL was allocated. Despite the heavy loads, the Ultra's still provide a comfortable & smooth journey with fully automatic transmission.

The VL class were delivered in a unique Dublin Bus core livery without such a large orange swoop before respray into the standard colours.

Finally, sincere thanks to the Dublin Bus driver on the day for being very accommodating, positioning the bus & overall helpfulness. CHEERS !!!!
